| Despite his young
age, Ray began playing at block parties and developed
a reputation. He started working with his rapper cousin
Magic Juan, getting involved with a breakdance crew
called City Side Breakers and learning how to cut
and scratch; he was called Ray Roc aka Lefty Scratch
for a while, due to his ability to scratch up a storm
with his left hand even though he is naturally right
handed.
“I became an editor that way” explains
Ray. “I was editing records by cutting two
copies
together. That ended up taking me into the studio
to do the same thing with early house records, but
instead of using turntables there I was splicing
tape
and doing reel to reels. I started making my own
special
mixes and re-edits to play in clubs, which ended
up
getting played on radio shows. Then I moved into
bootlegs,
making these twenty minute mega-mixes of all the
good
records around at the time.”
