| The
tune caught
the interest of one Todd Terry who connected with
the crew and asked them to put together a mega-mix
of records for a forthcoming label Warlock album
called
The War Party. "That album was the start of many
people in New York” recalls Ray. “It had
every one who was a DJ, producing experimental tracks
for the first time. Aside from the mega-mix we had
our first crack production called “No Para”
signed to the same album as well. Other first timers
and hit makers included Lil Louie Vega, Todd Terry,
Bobby Konders, A Guy Called Gerald, Nemesis, The Jungle
Brothers and even Marly Marl & Red Alert two legendary
hip hop DJ/producers who did house tracks before taking
hip hop to another level – and a bunch of others.
When Joe left Blade To The
Rhythm, Ray and Juan renamed
themselves Roc and Kato. The duo did a bunch of remixes
and productions and got their own studio called the
Digital Dungeon – yup, it was time for Ray to
move into the digital era at last. Roc and Kato’s
first big hit together was the awesome ‘Jungle
Love’ on Digital Dungeon/SoHo/Sony, a record
that caught the attention of everyone on the house
scene from Tony Humphries to David Morales, and eventually
the Slip ‘n’ Slide label in the UK, kick
starting a long relationship with the English and
European scene which is still in place today. Other
big tracks followed, most notably ‘Jungle Kisses’,
Whisper (with Deborah Cooper) and YO Mira (with Micheal
Moog). |
